The Ferrante Lab studies fat - how it functions, why we accumulate it, how fat changes with time and mass. A decade-and-a-half ago, we discovered that obesity leads to the accumulation of macrophages in adipose tissue so that in the most obese individuals more than 50% of the cells in an adipose tissue depot are macrophages. Much of the work in our laboratory since that time has focused on understanding how fat works and how the amount we have is determined
